Lithium ion battery VS Lead acid battery:
Let’s start with the inconvenience of lead acid batteries.
Most owners are not looking for another chore to add to their to-do list, and maintenance is a must with these batteries of old. Water levels must be checked each month, corroded terminals must be cleaned, and owners must tolerate smelly fumes as the batteries charge. Then there’s the task of just keeping them charged! Lead acid batteries take 8 hrs. to fully charge while lithiums can be charged in less than half this time. Taking care of lead acid batteries are frankly a pain.
Then there’s cart performance.
Most cart battery banks are comprised of 4 to 6 batteries (sometimes 8) depending on the operating voltage and the make/model of the golf cart. Typically the battery bank weight of lithium batteries vs lead acid is 75-80% less. That combined with the consistent power and speed that lithium batteries provide as they discharge (not true with lead acid) makes for a better ride and no worries about holding up the next foursome.
Lithium batteries are now more affordable than ever.
Ten years ago, cost was a prohibitive factor in conversion to lithium power. Because processes have continued to improve, manufacturing costs have come down substantially. Today lithium batteries for golf carts cost only a fraction of what they used to. In terms of efficiency and value, lithiums will last for 3500-5000 charge cycles which is 5 times longer than the old lead acid variety. This means users will spend more time on the course and less time battery shopping.
Advantages:
1. Increase Carrying Capacity
Due to their lighter weight, lithium-ion golf cart batteries increase your product’s speed and carrying capacity. Lithium batteries are half the size of lead acid alternatives and one-third the weight. That adds up to a weight difference of two average-sized adults, meaning your customers can fill every seat and still have the weight capacity for extra supplies and equipment.
2. Reduce Wear And Tear
Reducing your golf cart’s weight makes it easier for your customers to drive uphill or on challenging terrain. The golf cart won’t tear up the grass, and less stress is put on the brakes. Not only will your customers be able to brake at shorter distances, but they also won’t have to replace their brakes and other mechanical parts as often.
3. Improve Charging Speed
As many golfers will likely tell you, lead acid golf cart batteries take forever to charge. After 18 holes, it takes a full eight hours. However, lithium-ion golf cart batteries can be charged to 80 percent capacity in only one hour. Even better, a full charge only takes 2.5 to three hours.
FAQ:
Q1: How does temperature affect the performance of my lithium batteries?
A1: At higher temperature the capacity will be reduced and constant exposure will cause increasing capacity fade.
At lower temperature the impedance will be higher reducing efficiency of charging and discharging.
The BMS will protect the system from short term over temperature and low temperature operations but the installation must keep the batteries within the recommended temperature.
Q2: How do MATRIX LiFePO4 batteries perform in hot temperatures?
A2: LiFePO4 batteries will provide their full capacity and performance until they reach the Battery Management (BMS) protection level. The BMS maximum temperature ranges from 60-80°C (140-176°F). LiFePO4 batteries produce less heat than other lithium chemistries, but if they reach an upper limit, our BMS will protect the battery by shutting it off.
Q3:. Are there required certifications to ship lithium iron phosphate batteries?
A3: Yes, the Department of Transportation requires UN38.3 certification. All batteries must be UN38.3 certified in order to be legally transported via land, sea or air.
